Where the wind and sunlight linger, Okcheon Pungkyeong is a traditional Hanok emotional accommodation. It is a unique Hanok space designed and personally operated by a local neighborhood architect who loves nature and spatial design. Infused with both retro Hanok sensibilities and modern warmth, it provides a sanctuary where you can fully capture the beautiful scenery of Okcheon Stream.

Q : What is the story behind the beginning of this space?
A: We are an architect couple. We work right here in Culture Street as local community architects. Previously, we saw an entrepreneur from another region visit and say this neighborhood was so beautiful that they wanted to establish a guesthouse. Seeing that was the tipping point that made us think, "Ah, it would be wonderful if we tried this ourselves." Originally, while running our architectural firm here, my wife and I loved taking evening walks around the neighborhood after work because of its beautiful, affectionate, and welcoming vibe.
Q : Where was the spot you first envisioned, and where is the place your heart lingers the most even now?
A: We designed the bathroom layout in a rather unique way, placing two sinks side-by-side so couples or families can use them comfortably together. We also built a dedicated foot bath zone in the backyard. The toenmaru (wooden veranda) was architecturally extended to the opposite side to make it even more functional and comfortable. Guests especially love it when we roll away the bedding on the chimsang-maru (elevated wooden bed platform) to open up a wide, unobstructed view through the window. Things like the woody-scented diffusers and the jazz music playing in the background are entirely our personal taste, but many guests mention how much they enjoy those touches.

A: Since we are architects, we wanted to prove that a traditional Hanok can be incredibly sophisticated and highly functional without losing its raw structural beauty. The value we want to convey is "spatial inspiration." We hope our guests don't just stay overnight, but rather experience how a thoughtfully designed layout can change their mood, spark creative ideas, and deepen their relaxation.
Q : "I wish these kinds of people would visit." Do you have any specific guests you would highly recommend this place to?
A: We highly recommend it to families with parents, or couples who want to experience a deeper sense of aesthetic quietude. It's also an excellent space for individuals working in creative or design fields who want to slow down and absorb new design perspectives from the harmony of wood, light, and the framing of the windows.
Q : Are there any special places around the accommodation or unique to this area?
A: Because our stay is situated in the prime spot of Okcheon ("Row 1"), simply sitting on the veranda and listening to the stream flow is a special experience in itself. Nearby, there are several outstanding local restaurants, small independent artisan workshops, and vintage cafes along the Culture Street. We also love recommending the scenic walking trail that goes down Okcheon Stream and seamlessly leads into the larger Dongcheon Stream.

Q : As professional architects, designing your own lodging must have been unique. Were there any challenges?
A: When you design for a client, you follow a set brief, but when you design your own space, your own ambition keeps growing! We kept revising the blueprint to maximize the natural light and to weave the outdoor courtyard view flawlessly into every room. Balancing the tight legal regulations of remodeling a historic structure while maintaining a sleek, modern, user-friendly interior layout required a high level of meticulous planning, but it was an incredibly joyful challenge.

A: It is operated jointly by us—an architect husband and wife team. While I look over the macro structural flow, engineering, and maintenance, my wife meticulously curates the aesthetic touches, texturing, diffusers, and background music that fill the space with warmth. We manage this space with the same dedication we bring to building long-lasting homes.
